We are a Community School, staffed by volunteer teachers from the Wellington region.
They deliver a Sinhala language curriculum (developed in house) as well as provides all learners with the opportunity to experience and acquire knowledge and understanding of Sri Lankan (Sinhala) culture.
Buddhism, based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), aims to help individuals escape suffering and the cycle of rebirth by attaining nirvana through meditation and moral precepts.
Teaching Sinhalese involves introducing learners to the Sinhala script, which is an abugida where consonants and vowels are combined into syllables.

The year 1990 saw the birth of the Sinhala Class in Wellington. It was housed at the Batchelor Street Community House in Newlands (Community House has now been replaced by the Newlands Community Centre). In 1992 Seedevi De Silva initiated a Sinhala Class at Oswald Church Hall in Newlands.
The Wellington Sri Lankan School (WSLS) has a rich history spanning over three decades. Over the years, the school expanded its curriculum to include cultural and religious education, moving to various locations to accommodate its growing student body. In 2007, the school was officially renamed the Wellington Sri Lankan School.
In 2012 and 2016 WSLS was recognised for it’s services to the community by the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. In 2019 it was nominated as a finalist with 9 other organisations under child and youth development category.
Today, WSLS remains a vital institution for the Sri Lankan community in Wellington, providing education and cultural enrichment to its students.
